Ben Lomond Market

Ben Lomond Market

Ben Lomond Market or BLM has become a store that I shop at frequently, mostly because it is less than a mile away.  (We’ve lived in this valley [The San Lorenzo Valley] for the better part of 10 years now and affectionately refer to Ben Lomond Market as “Bend you over market”.  I have sworn never to go back to that store at least 10 times.)  In addition to being close, Ben Lomond Market occasionally offers fruit tasting, (kids love eating fruit off toothpicks), always has “shopper in training” carts and at the end of the trip usually gives the kids a balloon.

Whenever I am working up the mustard to take a trip to the market, (going to the store is a feat that has maintained a high level of difficulty in spite of the fact that I no longer have to contend with a car seat and/or a crying infant [ John is nearing 4 and Zach is 2, I sweat just as much as I used to].)  I look to John for guidance.  “What store should we go to?” I ask him as I name off the options, Safeway (with the behemoth carts), Ben Lomond Market (with the kiddie carts) or New Leaf (with the small carts and narrow aisles).  Provided he is not distracted by something or anything he will generally politely reply, “I don’t want to go to the store”.     I am left alone to pick my poison.  I choose BLM, just because it is closest, and has kiddie carts, which the kids like and fruit tastings which the kids like and balloons, which the kids like.

This day, we arrive at the market and head for the produce section.  (I like to hit the produce when the kids are fresh, that way, we can spend the most time there.)  Zach grabs some broccoli and pleased with himself for recognizing something that is familiar and that we most certainly need, puts it in his cart.  I point him toward the organic broccoli and we stroll over together.  Zach takes a baby potato that is next to the organic broccoli and puts it in his mouth.  I take the small potato from his mouth and toss it loose into the cart, (not minding if the teeny potato would somehow fall through the metal grate of the cart unnoticed during the trip.)  I bag the correct broccoli, Zach takes the bag and happily puts it in his cart.  John wants the carrots in his cart.  Zach throws an avocado.  “No Zach” says John as he replaces the avocado.   Zach disappears while I am bagging the celery and reappears wanting to show me something.   He points at a puddle of pee pee at the base of the potato display.
